Alpha Thoronka: A Teacher Bringing Hope in Fintonia

For the past ten years, Alpha Thoronka has dedicated his life to educating children in Fintonia through EduNations. His entire teaching career has been woven into the fabric of this remote village, where he has found not just a job, but a mission.

Born and raised in the Tonkolili District in the northern region of Sierra Leone, Alpha comes from a humble farming family in the Kholifa Rowalla Chiefdom. His parents, Sullay Thoronka and Mabinty Kamara, are members of the Temne tribe. Of their eight children—four sons and four daughters—only three received an education. Alpha is the only one currently employed, serving as the primary provider for his family, especially since the passing of his father in March 2017. Now, he lives with his mother and supports his late brother’s children, who live about 70 miles away. Though the distance is great, Alpha makes the journey to see them every month.

Alpha is not married, but his life is full of purpose. Working with EduNations has brought transformation not only to his career, but to his soul. Coming from a Muslim background, Alpha shares that EduNations has strengthened his faith in Christ. “I feel so proud working for EduNations,” he says. “It has improved my life and my faith, and brought hope to my family.”

Teaching brings Alpha immense joy, especially when working with younger students. “I always enjoy teaching letter sounds in the lower levels,” he shares. One of his favorite memories from the past school year was organizing a spelling bee. A young girl in his class gave an outstanding performance that day—an inspiring moment that reminded him of the power of education and the potential in every child.

Being sponsored as a teacher would mean the world to Alpha. He sees it not just as personal support, but as an investment in the educational system of Sierra Leone. “I feel so special,” he says. “Being sponsored helps provide the finances needed for us teachers to continue this important work.”

To the donors and sponsors who make EduNations possible, Alpha extends his heartfelt thanks:
“Many thanks and appreciation for your tireless support. You are giving hope to the hopeless. I pray for God’s provision and protection for you and your families. Thank you.”
