“School Supplies for Students” Campaign Underway!

July 28, 2021

This September, 3,050 students will be starting school at EduNations Hope Academies across Sierra Leone and they need school supplies and uniforms! Will you help us raise $25,000 to provide these essential needs? School Supplies Campaign Insta Post 1

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all over the past year and a half. Thanks to your commitment to EduNations, we have been able to continue igniting hope in Sierra Leone under such difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, we have not been able to hold our in-person summer fundraising events, which help us to prepare for the upcoming school year.

Despite these challenges, we are continuing in our mission to provide education to the most vulnerable children in remote villages of Sierra Leone.

Will you help us raise $25,000 by August 4 so that we can provide our 3,050 students with free school supplies and uniforms for the upcoming school year? Click here to donate!

Junior Secondary School Students Take 2021 National Year’s-End Exams

From June 21st to the 29th, EduNations’ students in their last year of Junior Secondary School participated in the 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) conducted by the West African Examination Council.

BECE2 (1)Candidates in the third year of approved Junior Secondary Schools are eligible to register to take part in this BECE examination. This is a big deal for them since passing the BECE means they are eligible to go on to SENIOR Secondary School

To give its students the best chance in the tests on four core subjects of English Language; Mathematics; Integrated Science, and Social Studies (as well as elective areas of study), EduNations spends a few weeks before the exams students to review strategies to improve their scores. EduNations also provides all candidates with examination materials and pays transport expenses to and from the exam centers.

One of our students said after the examination, “I want to thank all our donors whose generous contributions have enabled me to continue my education up to this level. Rokassa Senior Secondary School here I come!”

We look forward to reporting on testing results when they are available later this summer!

Golf Instagram Post (1)The event will include a 4-person scramble with skill prizes and a delicious lunch. We will also host a banquet dinner at the club following the completion of the round of golf.

Leading up to our day of golf, we will be kicking off a week-long online silent auction! Join in the fun to win items such as a getaway, signed sports memorabilia, gift baskets, and more. If you are interested in donating an item to our silent auction, click here to fill out our donation form. All auction items are due to Debbie Stauffer by September 1, 2021. If you have any questions, please email golf@edunations.org or call 412-522-4756.

Thanks to all of those who attended the 2020 EduNations Charitable Golf Tournament, we were able to Send Them to School for their first year at the Senior Secondary School in Rokassa, Sierra Leone! Now, we need to Send More to School, as this year will be the first year with two classes of students! Since the Senior Secondary School in Rokassa will function as a boarding school, our students from all 6 villages will come to Rokassa for their high school education where we will provide housing in the dormitories and a meal plan covering three meals a day for each student. Will you help us make this a reality for the second class of students?

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to Send More to School! This fundraising goal will provide room and board to the second class of students enrolled at EduNations Senior Secondary School in January 2022.

Successful Conclusion of “Widows and Orphans” Project

Disability3 (1)For a country like Sierra Leone which has faced extraordinary challenges like eleven years of bloody civil war, the Ebola outbreak, catastrophic mudslides, and now the COVID-19 pandemic, the “normal” challenges of reducing poverty and providing education have been especially difficult.

And sadly, the tragic effects of poverty, illiteracy, sexual abuse, and domestic violence are mostly frequently visited upon women and children, especially widows and orphans.  Although widows are sole breadwinners, rarely do they have source of income to feed their children or themselves nor the ability or strength required for subsistence farming.

Over the last year, EduNations has worked extensively with local churches and donor partner Hope Universal to support widows and orphans in six villages in the northern part of Sierra Leone. So, what was done?

  • Eight widows received micro-loans to start small businesses, Disability2
  • Six widows received agricultural training and seeds, and
  • Six more widows received vocational training in garment making or tailoring.
  • Twenty orphans were sponsored by Hope Universal to attend EduNations’ Senior Secondary School in Rokassa.

We’re happy to report that all twenty students completed the year with clear passes and have now been promoted to 11th grade (“Senior Secondary school 2”).

While lives are changed “one at a time”, we’re happy and grateful to report this collaboration has changed the lives of twenty widows, twenty orphans, and all those whose lives they will touch.
